Laminated Flexible Packaging

Laminated Flexible Packaging

Client:

Pacifico’s Taquitos

Example of:

PSG’s dedication to watching trends, planning ahead, and using in-house research and development to anticipate client needs.

It became apparent that the FDA was studying the effects of printing inks in packaging and its potential contact with foods. PSG saw a definite opportunity. This opportunity would provide a narrow-web process to keep the inks completely sandwiched within the layers of the film, thus producing a barrier layer between all inks and the packaged goods. These items include pastas, chips, snacks, cookies, meats, cheeses, and more.

Challenges:

Retain use of economical film, rather than change to costly boxes; print images on film that are appetizing and vivid; keep inks from touching food products.

Strategy:

It was obvious that meeting the challenges above would require dynamic re-thinking and changes in every process from in-line printing, to laminating inks, to creating inks that would look good and stand up to the new laminating process. PSG presented the challenge to their technical experts. Within six months, presses were modified, more durable inks tested, and new laminating techniques created. By the time the food industry began its search for suppliers who could meet the FDA requirements in a narrow web format, PSG was ready for roll-out without wasting clients’ time and money.

Results:

Pacifico Taquitos packaging is a fine example of what can now be achieved, in complete accordance with FDA regulations, and without sacrificing any eye appeal. Particularly outstanding is the highly detailed color photo and texture-look background—run on the 8-color press using 150-line screens. The 20-inch press saves clients money on plates and make-ready time.
