Surface Printing on Unsupported Film
Client:
Kemps Neapolitan Sandwich
Example of: Fast turnaround of short run. Client wanted to produce a small quantity of a new design film wrapper to test the market. Paper wrappers are no longer preferred for ice cream bars and frozen novelties—colors are not vibrant enough, barrier properties are limited, there are multiple handling issues, and overall costs are greater.
Challenges:
Design had to be heat-resistant, moisture-resistant, and scratch-resistant to handle the extreme conditions that this film package would require. Printing process had to ensure that inks would not scuff, scratch or run. Original layout design incorporated more colors than press had. Time frame to market was 2 weeks.
Strategy:
Met with client’s designers and adjusted design to use fewer colors, while maintaining the package’s integrity. In-house ink technician devised ink system to achieve desired results.
Results:
Job completed on time. Product well-received at test site. Client saved money and time by using fewer colors without sacrificing design impact. Project gave client new awareness of packaging possibilities for other product lines. Wide-web printer who sought out PSG for project now lists narrow-web printing as one of its capabilities, which grows his business, and routinely feeds all narrow-web projects he accepts to PSG.
